Every Morning — September 1, 2026: Jesus Used Mud… On Purpose?

Key Scripture

John 9:6–7 (NIV)

"After saying this, He spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. 'Go,' He told him, 'wash in the Pool of Siloam.'… So the man went and washed, and came home seeing."

Devotional

Hold on first.

Jesus did what?

He spat on the ground… mixed the spit with sand… rubbed the mud on a blind man's eyes… then told him to go and wash.

No antiseptic.

No bottled water.

No hand sanitizer.

Just… mud.

If this happened in Nigeria today, somebody would quickly bring out a phone and shout, "Abeg record am! Wetin be this?"

Let's be honest. If someone told us this miracle before reading the Bible ourselves, many of us would say, "That one no fit dey Bible."

Yet, there it is.

One of the most beautiful miracles Jesus ever performed began with something that looked completely strange.

That's how God often works.

Many of us have already decided what our breakthrough should look like. We have our own script. "Lord, send the alert." "Lord, give me the promotion." "Lord, let the visa come." "Lord, change my boss." We expect God to move in ways that make perfect sense to us.

But sometimes, He chooses a road that looks unusual.

Imagine the blind man arguing.

"Jesus, mud? You sure? My eyes no even dey see before. You come add sand join?"

He could have refused.

He could have walked away offended.

Instead, he obeyed.

And somewhere between the mud and the washing, his miracle happened.

Sometimes we delay our own peace because we are arguing with God's method instead of trusting His heart.

Maybe your journey has been longer than you expected.

Maybe you've prayed, fasted, cried, and wondered if God has forgotten your address.

Don't conclude too quickly.

The chapter isn't over yet.

God is not limited by what looks impressive. Throughout Scripture, He repeatedly used ordinary things to reveal extraordinary power. A shepherd's staff opened the sea. A little boy's lunch fed thousands. A sling defeated a giant. Mud became part of a miracle.

So don't despise small beginnings.

Don't despise ordinary obedience.

Don't despise the season that doesn't make sense yet.

My Nigerian people, I know the economy is hard. Sometimes you work from morning till night and still wonder where the money disappeared to. Sometimes the news alone can make your heart heavy. It is easy to think God has gone silent.

But today's story reminds us of something beautiful.

God has never needed perfect conditions before He performs perfect work.

If He could use mud, He can use your situation.

If He could turn an ordinary afternoon into a testimony, He can still surprise you.

So before you complain about the "mud" in your life, ask yourself one question:

"What if this is the very place where God is preparing my testimony?"

Prayer

Father, help me to trust You even when Your methods confuse me. Give me the humility to obey You, the patience to wait on You, and the faith to believe that You are working, even when I cannot yet see the outcome. In Jesus' name, Amen.
