Every Morning — September 24, 2026: Dead Bones Still Had Power
Even in seasons that feel finished, something of God's power can still be at work.
Key Scripture
2 Kings 13:20–21 (WEB)
"Elisha died, and they buried him… As they were burying a man, behold, they saw a band of raiders; and they cast the man into the tomb of Elisha. As soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet."
Devotional
Elisha is already dead and buried by this point. Not sick, not dying — buried. Finished, as far as anyone watching would assume. And then, completely unrelated to him, some men are in the middle of burying a different dead man when raiders suddenly show up, forcing them to panic and quickly toss the body into the nearest available tomb — which happens to be Elisha's.
The moment the dead man's body touches Elisha's bones, he comes back to life and stands up.
Read that again. This wasn't a miracle Elisha performed. He wasn't even alive to pray, speak, or lay hands on anyone. His bones did this. Whatever anointing, whatever measure of God's power had rested on this man throughout his ministry, apparently didn't expire the moment his heart stopped.
I find this story strangely comforting for reasons that have nothing to do with literal bones.
Sometimes we assume our usefulness, our impact, our purpose has an expiration date attached to visible activity — that once a season ends, once a ministry closes, once a relationship or a job or a chapter of life is "buried," whatever good came from it is finished too. This story quietly disagrees. Elisha's influence outlived Elisha.
Think about what you've poured into people, situations, or seasons that look completely over now. A ministry you're no longer part of. A person you mentored years ago who you've lost touch with. An investment of time, love, or teaching that felt buried along with whatever ended it. This story suggests something you may not have considered: what God did through you in that season doesn't necessarily stop working just because it's no longer visible or active.
"He who began a good work in you will complete it" (Philippians 1:6). That promise wasn't only about you receiving something — sometimes it's about what God started through you continuing to move, quietly, in ways you'll never fully witness.
This story also carries a simpler, more personal comfort: your current season, however "dead" or finished it feels, isn't necessarily the last word on what God can still do with it. If dry bones and buried prophets weren't beyond God's reach, your stalled dream, paused calling, or ended chapter isn't either.
Something of what God placed in you doesn't stop mattering just because it's no longer center stage.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that what You've done through me doesn't expire when a season ends. Remind me that even buried, finished chapters can still carry Your power forward. Give me hope for what feels dead right now. In Jesus' name, Amen.
